Ashoka rules by edict

Civilizations · South Asia · India

The Mauryan emperor Ashoka, after witnessing the slaughter of his Kalinga war, publicly renounced conquest and inscribed principles of tolerance, welfare and restraint on stone pillars across his realm.

Why it matters

The edicts are an early and striking case of a ruler publishing an ethical code directly to subjects — state communication as moral infrastructure — and they carried Buddhism across Asia.
