Bell patents the telephone

Alexander Graham Bell's patent — hours ahead of a rival filing — turned the telegraph's clicks into the human voice over wire.

Why it matters

The telephone made networks intimate and universal: switchboards, exchanges, the busy signal, the dial tone. For a century, the sound of a voice on a line was the sound of connection itself.
