The international public consortium and Celera simultaneously announced essentially complete drafts of the three-billion-letter human genome.

Why it matters

Biology gained a reference implementation: medicine could begin reading the individual, not just the species. Sequencing costs fell a million-fold in two decades — faster than Moore's law.
