Written in exile near Florence and published in 1532, The Prince analyzed power as it is practiced rather than as preachers say it should be.
Why it matters
Machiavelli separated politics from moral theology and founded modern political science — the uncomfortable study of means, ends and necessity. His name became an adjective, which is itself a history.
