Four days after launch, Armstrong and Aldrin flew the LM Eagle to Tranquility Base with about 30 seconds of fuel margin; Collins waited in orbit.
Why it matters
The Apollo guidance computer — integrated circuits, real-time software — was as radical as the rocket, and seed-funded the chip industry. It remains the demonstration that coordinated engineering can hit an impossible deadline.
