The World Wide Web opens to everyone

Tim Berners-Lee's CERN project — URLs, HTTP, HTML — was released royalty-free; by 1993 Mosaic made it visual, and the web took over the internet.

Why it matters

The web made the network something anyone could write on. Hypertext, links and the humble URL became civilization's new reference system — and this site, like everything else online, is a child of that decision.
